Green for different times of day

Sunset

Add red-oranges, Grumbacher Red and Quinachidone Red.

Orange, red and red-purple hues set the scene for sunset paintings. Tone your canvas with Cadmium Red Light. The closer it is to dusk, the cooler you want to make your wash. Continue the evening light theme by modifying your greens with those same sunset hues. Avoid sunny yellows. Paint it so that it looks like a green tree at sunset, not an autumn tree in full color.

The light of the descending sun creates many wonderful opportunities to use dramatic colors. Sunsets are generally warm paintings with extreme value differences. Backlighting is the key to capturing a sunset. The closer the sun is to the horizon, and the larger the object in front of it, the sharper the degree of contrast will be between the sky and the backlit objects in your scene.

Twilight

Add reds and Cadmium Red Deep.

Just after sunset, earthy reds - especially Cadmium Red Deep - become dominant. Dull the intensity of your bright greens with reds. It is easy to establish a quiet mood by using these muted colors. Keep your scene free of sharply defined details that are apparent only in bright sunlight.

Dusk

Add Cadmium Red Deep, Dioxazine Purple and Ultramarine Blue.

Fog in morning light looks very different from fog in the evening. Yellowish grays are the dominant hues in the morning, whereas evening fog is dominated with red-grays and blue-grays. Because fog is dense humidity, bright colors are muted, details cannot be seen, and treetops usually disappear.

Note:

No matter what time of day you are painting, the key to painting the color of light is to be consistent. For example, don't add sunny yellow flowers to a night scene without muting them or your viewers will be confused by the mixed message. The only time you should use bright colors in a night scene is when you are depicting man-made lights, such as a bonfire or a lit lamp post.
